Friends Association
For twenty years, Neuenburg Castle, the pride and joy of the little wine-growing town of Freyburg, was closed and left to slowly fall to ruin. Between 1971 and 1989, it was not possible to maintain the buildings for political and economic reasons. On 22 June 1989, a lightning bolt left the castle ablaze. Despite all the drama, the fire took on the role of a beacon in the turbulent autumn of 1989, lighting the way for active locals to found a citizens' action group and save the castle. In 1990, this became an official association to save and maintain Neuenburg Castle. It is thanks to their efforts and cooperation between various private and public partners that the castle can today again stand tall as an attractive destination.
